Updates information for tourists about Corona virus situation in Sicily

Starting from June 3, 2020 it will be possible to move between the different regions in Italy and between Italy and other EU countries. No quarantine or tests (online temperature checks) will be required but the guidelines for each country are still under discussion in these hours.

From June 15, 2020 also international flights from/to non EU countries will be allowed again also for tourism.

At present there are only few cases of Corona virus (Covid-19) in Sicily which has been among the less affected regions in Italy. Each regional government can decide specific measures considering the Covid-19 situation in the area. Below you can find further details about traveling limitations in Sicily

Moving in Sicily

From June 3 no permission is needed to move inside Sicily or between Sicily and other Italian regions or EU countries. There will be temperature checks at the airports. Special contact information, website registration or the installation of a smartphone app could be required but it's still under discussion in these hours and we will update the page once the final decisions will be published.

Starting from June 15 international travels also to not EU countries wil be allowed. It's necessary to wear masks in public places in presence of other people. Gloves and temperature checks are required in some locations. When moving around in Sicily take always with you a mask and gloves.

Situation at the airports and train stations

During the next weeks the number of flights from/to Sicily will increase. Catania Fontanarossa and Palermo Punta Raisi airports have never closed and Comiso and Trapani will reopen soon. Many flight companies are planning the restart of their connections. There will be health controls at the airports

Situation of the hotels and beaches

Hotels are reopening. There is a special regulation about the hotels. All rooms will be carefully cleaned daily. Online payment and booking is recommended. The hotel beaches must reserve a safety area for each customer. Groups sports like beach volley are note allowed at present.

Restaurants and bars

Restaurants and bars have reopened and must follow special health rules. Social distance between customers must be at least 1 meter. Booking in recommended for restaurants.

Public transport

Busses must guarantee minimum safety distance among passengers. Taxis and private driver service are active. Two people can seat on the rear sites but it's necessary to wear a mask.

Archaeological sites, museum and monuments

Some of the main archaeological sites and museums in Sicily have reopened on May 30 and the other ones will reopen in the next weeks. At present prebooking of entrance tickets is required in many sites, choosing the entrance time. Only small group of visitors are allowed. Tickets can be purchased through the official website of the Sicilian region.

Guided tours

Guided tours are possible again. At present groups of max 4 participants are allowed inside museums and 12 participants inside archaeological areas.

The municipality of Taormina has decided that for the month of March 2020 parking will be free for cars and motorcycles at the parkings Lumbi and Porta Catania, from Friday at 4 pm to Sunday at midnight. The SAC (Società di Gestione dell'Aeroporto di Catania) has communicated that from Monday, March 11 to Wednesday March 20, 2019 there will be urgent maintenance works on the landing area of Catania Fontanarossa airport. Due to this works there can be changes in arrival and departure times, cancellations and some flights could land at other airports. Travelers should contact their airline for updated information. The hourly arrivals will be reduced from 10 to 4 and some flights will land at Comiso airport. Probably Alitalia will cancel some flights and some of Ryanair flights will land in Comiso. Scala dei TurchiDue to landslide hazard the municipality of Realmonte (Agrigento) has forbidden part of the access trails to the cliffs of Scala dei Turchi.  The coast guard has also forbidden access to the sea in the same area and for a distance of 25 m from the coastside. We suggest to call the municipality for updated information if you are programming a visit to the famous cliffs near Agrigento, in southern Sicily.
